Volunteer Opportunities in Horticulture

Community Gardens in Suffolk County:

See http://ccesuffolk.org/gardening/community-gardens-in-suffolk-county for a list of some of Suffolk County’s Community Gardens.

Cornell Cooperative Extension, Nassau County:

Due to our removal from the Nassau County budget, CCE-NC needs to rely on its volunteers more than ever.  We have many volunteer opportunities in all areas of extension work – nutrition, camp, horticulture, even as board members.  If you are interested volunteering a portion of your time to CCE-NC, please contact Dionne Marshak at 516-433-7970 x 17.

The Greenbelt Native Plant Center

The Greenbelt Native Plant Center is eager for volunteers willing to make a commitment to a regular schedule.  There is a great deal to be done in the greenhouses, soil mixing and prep rooms, seed processing and storage areas, and in the nursery yard.   Your contribution will make a difference.  Using a science-based approach to native plant production and seed banking offers a unique opportunity for students interested in habitat conservation and restoration, nursery management, horticulture, and other related professional fields.  http://www.nycgovparks.org/greening/greenbelt-native-plant-center/volunteers

Long Island Native Plant Initiative

LINPI realizes its mission as a non profit organization with the help of talented and motivated volunteers. Throughout the year, LINPI will make numerous volunteer activities available helping us advance our efforts to produce locally sourced plant materials for Long Island’s nursery and landscape industry as well as the general public.  Volunteering is a mutually beneficial endeavor; LINPI receives the help we need to advance our goals and our volunteers are afforded an opportunity to advance their knowledge of native plants and plant propagation.

Bailey Arboretum, Lattingtown, Nassau County

A decade ago, when Nassau County managed Bailey Arboretum, they had seven full-time employees on the premises.  Today we operate with the equivalent of two, one full-time and three part-time. You can see why volunteers are important to us!  If you have ideas for children’s activities at the upcoming Pumpkin Festival, experience handling PR, a few hours a month you can spare to stuff envelopes or manage the mailing list, a passion for pruning or weeding (or a desire to learn more) we have plenty of work to go around. Please give us a call at 571-8020 or send us an email at  baileyarb@optonline.net.     We’d be very, very grateful for your help.
